Lymphedema & Lipedema

Lymphedema and lipedema are both chronic conditions that commonly affect the upper and lower extremities. While they may appear similar at first glance, they differ significantly in their causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is caused by an impairment of the lymphatic system, which may result from infection, surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. When the lymphatic system is compromised, it cannot adequately drain lymph fluid, leading to swelling (typically in the arms or legs).

Management strategies for lymphedema include:

  • Compression garments

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

  • Specific lymphatic exercises

  • Skincare and lifestyle adjustments

Lipedema

Lipedema, in contrast, is not related to the lymphatic system. It is a chronic disorder of fat metabolism, characterised by the abnormal accumulation of fat cells, usually resulting in symmetrical swelling of the legs and sometimes the arms. This condition almost exclusively affects women and can be painful or tender to the touch.

Management options for lipedema may include:

  • Compression garments

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)

  • Lifestyle changes

  • Surgical interventions

Our Myotherapist Cassie is specially trained in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a gentle and effective technique that can help alleviate the discomfort and swelling associated with both lymphedema and lipedema.
